What's been goin' on with us... and a HUGE prayer request

****update:  it's 4:30 pm and we just spoke with fanny and gustavo.  freddy came through surgery just fine.  they did a colonoscopy to remove 4 polyps and possibly (my previous mistake) remove part of his intestine.  in the end they removed 4 polyps from his colon, but did not remove any of his intestine, although he has an external bag for the next two months.  when the camera reached the end of its reach and the doctors determined that further surgery to remove more would be risky, they decided to stop for the day, although it is probable that there are more polyps to be removed.  now, the plan is to rest and recover for a month before further surgery.

i'm sorry if this note doesn't make a ton of sense.  i'm still trying to figure out all the details myself, while typing this quickly in order to leave the house.

thanks again, everyone, for your prayers!!

***update:  as of 2 p.m. freddy was still in surgery.  we'll call again at 5 p.m. this evening and i'll update via twitter (which you can read on my left side-bar), since i won't be by my computer at that time.  thanks everyone, for your encouragement and prayers!

**update: freddy went into surgery this morning at 10a.m.  (costa rica is on the same time zone as we are.  they are due south.)  he'll be out of surgery around 1p.m.  fanny didn't make it to the hospital in time to see him before he went in, and is pretty upset about that.  lord, please guide the doctor's hands...

original post:
stream of consciousness style

today is kind of  a heavy day for us...  i'll tell you why, but first i want to get to a couple of business items:

first off, i am super excited about how Mi Querida Biblia is shaping up.  it's going to be incredible!  if you haven't read, check it out here.  so far, i think about 12 of us are going to do it together!  yay!  stay tuned for a post later with everyone involved and some tips on how to get ready to incorporate a new habit into your life.  it's gonna be good!

second, don't forget about our Love-A-Thon.  this morning, we finally got unstuck from 89%.  only $230 to go to finish helping ellyn (a single mom of 4 with quite a story) seal the deal to keep her house!  that is so close!  please pitch in!

i'm super excited to announce that kiarri is in labor now!!  soon that little one will be here.  :)

oh, and you'll also want to come back later for some fun pictures and sledding videos from our weekend in kingdom twindom

ok, but back to what's going on with us...

you may remember a few weeks ago, when i wrote another stream-of-consciousness post in which i alluded to some stuff that we were going through, but which i wasn't ready to share yet.  that day i got a call from my mother-in-law (fanny), who lives in costa rica.  it was about alejandro's dad, freddy.  he has been diagnosed with colon cancer and it's malignant.

when we were in costa rica over the christmas holidays, his dad was thinner than ever and had been dealing with some serious intestinal discomfort.  it seemed his body tolerated less and less types of foods as time went on.  the doctors were trying to explore food allergies, but nothing seemed to be conclusive.  finally, they did some tests and discovered cancer.  no definitive prognosis has been given, but the situation is not looking good and the conversations feel very down and ominous.

it was a rough day when i had to tell my husband about his dad.  let's just say we both cried.  a. lot.

i immediately wanted to share this with all of you so ya'll can pray for us and for freddy.  but alejandro is a private guy and wasn't ready for his hurt to be known by all.  so i respected that.

then just last night, he said to me, "i think i'm ready for you to write about my dad on your blog."

translation, "please tell your blog readers and beg for their prayer because i just don't know what else to do."

it's a little bit tougher for me to share very specific news, because of several factors.  first, what fanny (alejandro's mom) understands from the medical jargon and can pass on to us is limited.  second, fanny and alejandro use a lot of slang, plus the phone connection isn't always super clear, so sometimes i miss stuff.  third, it's socialized health care and i don't think fanny gets as much detail and clear communication from doctors as we are used to here in the united states.  and fourth, because cancer is hard to nail down definitively in the first place.

what i do know for sure is that freddy has been on a liquid diet for 30 days now.  once they determined he needed emergency surgery, it took him four days to get admitted to the hospital because they didn't have a bed for him.  then it took a week for them to get his body ready for surgery.  i don't understand why it took that long.  and today he is having surgery to remove at least part of his intestine and to determine a prognosis.

so please pray!
  • for my husband, who is hurting and fearful and very far away from his family who he wants to squeeze right now.
  • for fanny, who is carrying the bulk of the burden on her shoulders - caring for her husband and family, working to pay bills, making trips across town in taxi and bus (her '75 vw bug - her only car isn't working now), missing days of work, being the spiritual leader of her household (she is the only one who knows christ) and all of that on top of the emotional stress of having a spouse with cancer.
  • for gustavo (alejandro's brother) and his pregnant wife, angie, who live with fanny and freddy - that they would be a support and would look to christ - though they don't know him.
  • and mostly for freddy, that the lord would call him to himself and heal his heart and his body, opening his eyes to his deep need for jesus.

(freddy really wasn't very miserable in this picture.  he just dislikes photos. lol.  this is the best family photo i've got!)

thanks everybody,

It's... Mi Querida Biblia

I'm pretty big on accountability.  Not accountability that sounds like, "Hey, did you do such-and-such last week?" or "Have you stayed out of this-and-that today?"  I mean, there's a time and a place for that.  But the kind of accountability I love and have a lot of in my life is the accountability that happens when friends are open and life is shared and struggles are admitted and encouragement and prayer and life together happens.

So we've got a lot of that type of accountability in our lives.  For our marriage.  For my business.  For my emotional and spiritual life.  For my parenting.  But I was realizing the other day that there is an area in my life that has been seriously neglected lately, and that is the time each day I spend reading God's Word.

Or maybe I should say not reading God's Word.  Because I definitely don't do it enough.

And I think most of us can relate to that.

And I was also thinking, how cool it is that we all - in this crazy online bloggy world of ours - share so many thoughts and things about our faith walks.  Wouldn't it be cool...  seriously cool... if we could do that with regards to the scripture we read.  Particularly if we were all reading the same scripture.  And then God reminded me of how I've really been wanting He's really been wanting me to read through the Bible.

I did it once before.  I was in college.  And I don't know about you, but there are very few things that I read 10 years ago that I remember well.  Ahem, or remember at all!  The only thing I do remember is that it rocked my faith and drew me closer to God unlike anything else ever.

So an idea was born.  What if a bunch of us hooked up and read through the Bible in a year.  Together!?!

Ok, I'm gonna have to contain how stinkin' over-the-top excited I am about this!!

Here's how it'll work...

Step 1:  Go to YouVersion.  Create an account. YouVersion is the Bible online, but with a ton of other really cool features... namely, their Bible Reading Plans.  So once you've created an account, click on My and then click on Reading Plans.  Next click Explore Reading Plans (stay with me... it's worth it...) and then scroll down to the one called Chronological

That's the one we're gonna do.  I picked this one because it's got 3-5 chapters of the Bible to read per day (chapters, not books) and it takes you through the Bible chronologically in a year.  Things always make more sense for me, when they're in order... particularly the prophecy and stuff.  (Which I have a hard enough time understanding as it is!)

Ok, a couple more things before you leave YouVersion.  First, take some time to click around and explore.  You can adjust the start and end dates of your plan.  Change the dates so that the start date is March 28, 2010.  That's our launch date.  That'll give us a week to get organized.

Step 2:  Leave a comment and let me know you're in!
I am SO looking forward to the camaraderie, friendship, discussion, personal spiritual growth and community spiritual growth as we dive into God's word together.  More to come soon, but for now, leave your comments!

First Finger Food!

Just before Danny turned 8 months old, we let him try his first finger foods... pancakes!
"So Danny, how do you feel about this new experience?"

"I'm ready, Mom! This is great! I couldn't be more excited!"
"Alright, here we go... "

"This stuff is weird. It's squishy!"

"Hmm... I'm not really sure what to do with it."

"But it's fun!"

"Oh, you eat it!?"

"Well, now I've squished it so much that it's pretty
much dough again and I can't get it into my mouth."

"Oh, here we go..."
"Ummmm..."

"I think I like it..."

"Yep! I like it!"

"Oh good... You know, cause every kid likes pancakes!"

It's a...

This is not the big thing I was referring to yesterday, but this is just came to my attention last night and it's very important! I have never had the privilege of being directly involved in God's church coming together to support someone in need quite like this ever before. Let me explain...

Through this crazy space called blogland, I've been privileged to get to know a great lady named Ellyn. She's got quite a story.

She doesn't think she's strong, Ellyn (even after losing her precious Eli, raising funds to allow her deaf fourth-born to hear and surviving a divorce that was just finalized this week), but she's far too strong to ever ask for this kind of help. Well, that's what friends are for, right?! Sarah and Mandy thought up this brilliant Love-A-Thon and we're happy to ask on Elyn's behalf (and, by the way, she has no idea we are doing this)!

Well ok, she might now.

In order to stay in her home, the only home Seth has ever known, she needs to raise $2,400 by the end of the month. If you don't know her story, and why she is in danger of losing the family home, just click here. But we're warning you: you will fall head-over-heals in love!

To keep this little fundraiser completely legal, you will not be donating money in exchange for raffle tickets. Simply donate (any amount helps), and then comment to tell us you have done so. Mandy is giving away a blog makeover, and Sarah is giving away four (yea!) Jared Anderson CD's.

I am giving away this adorable newborn hat hand-made by my mom:
And your choice of one of these stylish hats for women:

Photobucket

And one of my favorite Mary Kay products:

Extra Emollient Night Cream

For extremely dry skin. Helps maintain the natural moisture of the skin and replenishes hydration in especially dry areas by forming a protective shield to condition and seal in moisture.

You can use this on: paper cuts; inside dry noses to prevent bleeding; rim of nose when sick and the skin is chapped; chapped lips; cracked heels, knees and elbows; raw or cracked skin from nursing; diaper rash; children's dry red chapped skin; split cuticle overnight with a bandaid; prevent acne scarring on a scabbing blemish; exzyma; psoriasis; The list goes on...

Aren't they great prizes?!

If you are interested in the blog makeover (and I know you are!), comment on Mandy's post. If you are interested in some rockin' praise music (and why wouldn't you be?), comment on Sarah's post. If you are interested in my prizes, comment on mine. If you're interested in all of them, comment on all of them!

Wanna help more?! Of course you do!

If you'd like to place this Chip-in on your blog and possibly offer your own prize to commenters, just let Sarah know. She'll put you on a list so that all Love-a-thon participants will have a chance to enter your giveaway as well!

We have two weeks to raise the necessary funds.

Let's see if we can do it in one!

It's 1 AM and you may see no change on my blog now...  but come back soon because I'm about to launch the biggest little blog project I've ever done!

Ok I know, that's not sayin' much.

But trust me.  This is big!

And you will so want to be a part of it!

Just sayin'.

Anyway Love

A few days ago I got a newsletter email from Focus on the Family - you know, the kind you usually skim through and promptly click "delete." (I really do love Focus on the Family, I just don't always read newsletters I get in my email, no matter who they're from.) But for some reason this newsletter caught my eye. It was featuring an article called "Anyway Love."

The concept grabbed onto my heart and wouldn't let go.

I encourage you to take a minute and click over to read it. Just click here.

The author of the article, Gary Thomas, posed the question: Will you love only because? Or are you willing to love anyway?

So often in our marriage we love because. That's usually the way it is for me. My husband is incredible. He is loving, creative, dedicated, loyal, gentle, gentlmanly, extremely hot, and has a Latino accent that just makes me beg for mercy. He's pretty much the epitome of a Latin Lover. My Latin Lover.

He regularly does things like make me hot soup in bed when I'm sick or bring home a bottle of wine for date night. He just is great at romancing me in general. In fact just last night, after our son was in bed and our date night had started, he ordered me to put on my most comfy (aka old) pajamas, sit in our office, immerse myself in searching online for my new laptop (which I am over the top excited about) and to not even think about peeking out or coming downstairs. Once I was allowed downstairs... well, he completely blew me away.

The room was glowing by the fire-light and candles threw shadows across the room. Soft romantic music was playing. The massage table (my husband studied massage therapy) was in the middle of the room and a wine bottle was on a low table. He kissed me softly, led me to sit down, served me wine and washed my feet. While I sipped and marveled at what I possibly could have done to deserve this treatment (uh yeah, nothing) he brushed my hair. All this before the massage.

Because love, on evenings like this, is really easy for me to grasp onto.

But it's not always.

Like any couple, we have our demons, and life is not roses, sunshine, glasses of wine and a massage every day of the year.

There are plenty of days when because love has totally lost its place in our home and our hearts. That's when anyway love is really tough for me. As we wade through the thick stuff of our lives and get irritable with eachother... on the days when we snap and pick at each other... when the dishes pile up, the laundry is exploding all over the room, tempers are short and patience wears thin... anyway love is most important, but most difficult to attain.

I am convicted tonight of all nights - while my husband and I enjoy a peak in our marriage - that anyway love is what Jesus referred to when he said in Mark 12:30-31

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."
Whenever I read these verses, I think about my neighbor. You know, the guy who physically lives next door. Not my husband. When Alejandro's being ugly to me I don't think about loving him as myself. I don't think about, "How would I want him to treat me if I were doing what he's doing now." I don't think about the temper tantrums I throw over things I don't get and how Christ loved me anyway. I don't think about anyway love at that moment.

And this is something I desperately want to change about myself.

Not just because anyway love creates and cultives because love in our marriage, but because anyway love helps me to understand better the heart and passion of Christ as he died in agony on the Cross for you and I. That I think is the point of marriage. To help me understand Christ's heart for His bride.

It has often been said that marriage is not for our happiness but for our holiness. We fool ourselves when we tell ourselves that complete happiness and joy is attainable in our lives on this earth - be that in marriage, career, parenting, or anything else. It was a hard thing to swallow the day I realized that it will always be this hard. As long as I'm human and I'm here on this earth, it's not gonna get any easier. I pray I get a teensy bit whole lot better at this marriage thing, but I don't expect it to get any easier. And Actually, I'm ok with that. Somehow it takes the pressure off. It means I don't have to stress about not having it all together.

I only have to take one day at a time and focus on Jesus' anyway love for me and giving that anyway love away to those around me - starting with my husband.

Starting. Now.

No Way!

Danny was just pulling on something and putting it in his mouth that he shouldn't have. I said, "No," and put it down.

Then I looked away.

When I looked back he had it back in his mouth. He saw me looking, took it out of his mouth and gave me a guilty look as if to say, "Oh you saw me?!"

Are we at this stage ALREADY?

Oh no!

31

Happy Birthday to me...
Happy Birthday to me...
Happy Birthday to meeeeeeee....
Happy Birthday to me!

I'm 31 today.

Which means I'm officially old.

Ok, maybe not. I still do feel like I'm just getting started. Although I realized the other day that I can no longer remember all of my teenage and adult life in vivid detail. Isn't that weird? One moment you can remember each new journey and adventure God had you on and all of the things you learned, and then all of a sudden some of it starts to get blurry.

Ok, now I'm really feeling old!

But what I do remember...

Let's see... I remember sitting next to Mom while she read the stack of books I brought to her (or at least two or three of them). I remember my Dad saying that he would always be just a big kid and bedtime guitar lullabyes with him. I remember making a fort out of our jungle-gym and a blanket in the back yard on hot summer days. I remember praying under a tree at church with my Dad and giving my heart to Jesus. I remember running outside when it rained to splash barefoot in all the puddles and get as wet as possible.

I remember blowing out birthday candles on the split cake (half blue and half pink) with my Grandpa who I shared a birthday with. I miss him. I remember junior high and awkward days months years. I remember spilling something Every. Time. I sat down to eat dinner. Anywhere. I remember starting high school and all of a sudden I was way more emotional than I understood and way too serious about boys. I think I'd rather forget most of the rest of high school!

I remember my first year of college and walking down the hill next to the ocean on the way to my dorm. I remember my messy roommate. I remember the summer I spent in the mountains falling in love. I remember the summer I spent in the mountains getting my heart broken. I remember giving up. I remember getting up again. I remember getting on a plane by myself to go to a country I'd never been to. I will never forget walking through a slum my first day in that country, feeling completely helpless and lost and alone in a place where I couldn't talk to anyone but I wanted to help everyone.

I remember finding someone to talk to. I remember talking to him for hours. And hours. And hours. I remember when he gave his heart to Jesus. I remember that by the time I decided to give my heart to him, he already had it. I would rather forget the four months we spent apart. I remember reuniting in my country and frustrating conversations as he learned English. I remember his hard work. The proposal. The question. I remember I Do.

I remember a mariachi band trumpet blaring and my surprise at a true serenade from my new husband. I remember new small apartments, new pets, new jobs, new social groups, moving and a new house. I remember the first winter with snow.

I remember five years and our weekend getaway. I remember my shock at the pregnancy that resulted. And my utter elation two seconds later. I remember a big tummy and swollen feet. I remember kicks through my ribs. I remember sleepless nights. I will never ever forget the first time I saw him. I remember how tiny he was.

And now somehow I'm 31. So much to remember. (I guess I remember more than I thought.) Somehow the years have flown by and at the same time I have a million to go (Lord willing). So much to be thankful for.

Thank you all for sharing it with me!

Oh and don't forget my silly birthday wish! Leave a comment! Or two or three! Ha! :)

But most of all, I pray that you have a wonderfully full blessed day and that you remember all you have to be thankful for.

In His Love,
