He Left... ...Again

HE LEFT...

...my love tank full...

...the smell of salmon in our kitchen...

...a smile on my face...

...our son worn out from lots of soccer playing...

...his smell in our bed...

...our Christmas lights put away!

...me to take long hot showers un-rushed by a 20 month old...

...my hand warm from being held...

...me a little boy who won't stop saying, "Mama! Papa! Mama! Papa! Mama! Papa!"...

...one less gallon of milk in the refrigerator (thank goodness, because we had too much!)...

...me in bed each morning to get up slowly while he did the morning diaper...

...all the dishes clean...

...me not a crumb of banana bread...

...many shared prayers and worship over our son...

...renewed hope and vision for the future...

...me worn out from our family's exploration of Focus on the Family today...

...laughter...

...a birthday card from my Grandma and the anticipation of opening it in the morning!

...his wedding ring on our dresser at night...

...me breathless...

...thankfulness in my heart for him...

...AGAIN.

But this time, he won't be away for very long.  :)

Memory Lane Monday

Memory Lane Monday was a series I started a long time ago with high hopes of posting something every single week and chronicling our history as well as our present.  I'd still like to do that.  Maybe as time goes on I'll be more and more consistent about it.  Anyhow, I was flipping through old film photos of mine and found a bunch from when we were dating.

For those of you who don't know our story, we met in Costa Rica.  I moved there for a year as a missionary to teach English to elementary school kids at a Christian school.  Alejandro grew up there.  I rented a room from his neighbor's house and walked past his bedroom window every day on the way to school.  He worked at the Internet Cafe around the corner where I went to write to my family.  And so our story began.

Me in my classroom in San José, Costa Rica:

This is my first grade English class.

This is our first date.  Well, actually, not our first date.  But it was the first time we went out together. Alejandro invited me and another missionary friend of mine to go to the Cartago Cathedral.

Early on in our dating relationship, he took me to one of the inactive volcanoes. Behind us is the crater left behind by the Irazú Volcano.  It's high enough up that temperatures drop down to 45°F, which is practically snowy weather in Costa Rica.

About ten miles up the road from the house Alejandro grew up in is a bed and breakfast named Rancho Redondo.  It's absolutely enchanting.  We spent an afternoon there and dreamed of coming back there married one day.

It rained and we got drenched, but as you can see, we didn't care too much.  We've been back there as a married couple several times now.  It's still just as enchanting.

In July of that year, my parents came to Costa Rica to spend 3 weeks seeing what I did, traveling, and meeting the young man they were pretty certain I'd marry.  We took our parents to a trout farm and we all fished.  We got poured on (again).  But we still didn't care.  We spent the entire day translating, since no one in our family is bilingual (at least they weren't then).  This was the one and only day ever that all four of our parents were together and it's the only photo with all four parents that we have.

At the end of the school year (which in Costa Rica ends November 30), I got ready to go home.  We both desperately wanted to get married, but I left Costa Rica without truly knowing if any of our plans would come to fruition and if we'd ever see each other again.  When countries, cultures, languages, and international immigration laws stand between you, there's just no telling, no matter how much you trust each other.  This was one of our last days together before my return home.

That was when Mark 11:23-25 became our verse.  We spent four miserable months apart and afterwards I never wanted to be apart again.  Here's a cheesy picture I sent to him four weeks after we'd said a teary goodbye in the airport.

Apparently, neither did he, because he spent six months in San Diego with me saving up money from side jobs and yard work in order to propose.  The day I left to go to Costa Rica for a year, I never dreamed that out of my obedience to His call on my life, God would give me this.

(That's an engagement ring on my finger.)
Or this.

(This is the day we got married.)
Or this.

"My thoughts are higher than your thoughts and my ways are higher than your ways." (Isaiah 55:9 my paraphrase)  His plan for me was better than anything I could ever have dreamed up.

Playtime

This morning after breakfast, the three of us sat down to play with homemade play dough.  Danny lost interest before very long.  Alejandro and I, however, sort of got into it.

I made this

while watching in amazement as Alejandro created this.

I looked around and stretched my creative abilities to make this.

I was pretty proud of myself!  Alejandro absolutely blew me away (as he usually does) with this.

Danny played around us.  We sculpted with play dough.
And that's how we spent our morning.

My Boys Are Being Boys

Together.

20 Months

Dear Danilo,

Well, you're 20 months! You are the funnest kid on the planet in my personal and totally unbiased (ha!) opinion.  You're still just barely over 20 pounds, but lest that fool anyone, you can hold your own and as Melissa said well, "Honey, that kiddo has so much personality it would be impossible to put it in a box. ;-)"

You're starting to tell me when your diaper is bothering you, so it won't be too terribly long before we start potty training. In fact, I bought a potty seat today, just to let you start sitting on it before your bath.  No real training coming yet.  Just gettin' used to the seat.  I'm gonna wait until you're good and ready.

You're saying all kinds of things, although few of the words are very recognizable to anyone but me. "Doggie," is the clearest one, by far. You say "banana" by pronouncing the b and then wagging your tongue back and forth. It's the cutest thing.

You are still working on getting those 8 teeth to come through. It's truly awful for you but you're a trooper.   You LOVE electronics.  Your favorite teething item?  The spiral cord of the charger for the cell phone that we gave to you as your play phone.  You don't really bite.  You just rub it up against your gums.  I couldn't figure out until today why you liked to play with that thing so much.  Well, and the fact that you make me hold it, stretch it across the room, and then see it bounce back like a stretched out phone cord.  Oh wait, you probably don't know what that is.  Or if you do, it's because it was in a history book or a museum.

Wow.

You have handled these last two months without your Papa like a champ.  You definitely know him and instantly want to be held by him when you see him (and you won't let him put you down), but when he's gone, you are still your happy-go-lucky confident self.  When he's on Skype, you say, "Mama!!!" and point to him.  Then once we say, "Papa" about 14 times, you give in and say, "Papa!!!!" with just as much enthusiasm.

You would eat cereal and milk until you exploded if I let you.  It's really fun to watch you eat it it run down your arms.  We're going to take dairy products mostly out of your diet again, as they do, after all, seem to have a subtle worsening effect on your messy diapers.  During this teething phase at least, we're going to minimize the dairy as much as possible.  You also love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  Yesterday you ate two whole ones for lunch!  You say "jugo" (juice) and agua (water) but you've forgotten that you used to know how to say "leche" (milk).  You definitely know which is which and you are very particular about which one we give you.  That's mostly fine, since your "jugo" is actually half Pedialyte and half water, so at any given moment I'm fine with you having any of them.  You also love fig newtons, blueberries, and pretty much anything else that makes your diaper a nightmare for me to clean.

Oh and pancakes.  Let's just not start with pancakes.

Honey, your giggle will echo in my ears until I'm 90 and you're 60.  There is just no describing it...

Most of the time when we pray before meals, you pray out loud with me.  Of course, it's gibberish for you, but you bow your head and put your hands together and when I say Amen, your last syllable is louder than the rest and you give a smile and a nod and reach for your food.  So, I guess it's time to start working on saying, "Gracias Dios por mi comida. Amen." (Thank you God for my food. Amen.)

When you are done with your food, you slide your dish across the table to me.  (We're working on teach you NOT to do that.)  It's amazing, though.  You are really good at sliding it right to me, two feet away without making it tip or fall off the table.  It's quite impressive.  You also follow that up by signing all done to me.  It's so great not to guess anymore!

You listen well (usually) and when I have to correct you, you usually receive it and the rest of the day goes better.

You go to bed at 7p.m. and wake up again between 7 and 8 a.m.  (THANK YOU, CHILD.)   My favorite part of the day?  Is after pj's and a diaper and brushing teeth and the light is off and it's time to pray.  You snuggle your head into my neck, wrap your arms around my shoulders, and sigh a huge sigh of relief.  You suck your (still newborn) pacifier and touch your eyelashes with the tip of your thumb or finger.  (I wrapped my fingers in the ruffles of my pillow.  You touch your eyelashes.  It's a comfort thing.)  And there we snuggle.  Sometimes it's a half second.  Sometimes it's a few minutes.  But it's ALWAYS my most favorite moment of the day.  You're a snuggler.  Even during the day you'll stop what you're doing just to come give me a hug and it absolutely makes my universe glow.

I love you, Danny.  I'm so proud of who you are becoming.

Love,
Momma

Food On My Mind

Well, after three days of being sick (and today was the worst) I think I may be rounding the corner.  The fact that it's past midnight and I'm still up is definitely evidence of my return to normalcy.  Now, to set the alarm so that I can make sure the sleeping patterns return to normal as well.

Tonight my bloggy efforts were all focused on food.  (My appetite must be returning as well.)  I spent quite a bit of time in Mi Cocina, sharing some of my favorites.

Let's see, there's homemade chicken noodle soup.

Banana bread.

The most amazing pancakes ever.  (It's not bragging if it's true.  These are the ones I was raving about on Twitter a week or so ago.)

A recipe straight from my Costa Rican mother-in-law mother-in-love's kitchen:
Picadillo de Papa.

And my favorite salad combination at the present moment.

You can find these and many other recipes over at

Let's see... What else did I work on tonight?  Oh yeah, I joined the BlogFrog community.  That's sort of exciting, I guess.

Oh, and I'm working on a 35 by 35 list.  Thirty five things I want to do before I turn 35 years old.  Which is three years from Wednesday, just in case you were curious.  Yep.  I'm 32 on Wednesday.  Eek!  I've decided I want to save up for a really nice camera for my birthday, so if you send me birthday money (ahem) you know that's what it will be going towards.

I started writing a "Dear Danilo" post for his 20-month birthday which passed a few days ago.  They are getting harder and harder to write, as he is doing more and more.  I want to capture every bit of his personality and put it in a box to pull out for years to come.  Especially his giggle.  Lord, have mercy, his giggle.

Alright, that's enough for now.  Enjoy all that cooking I shared with you!

G'night,

Thankful

I'm thankful tonight to The Chatty Mommy for her giveaway of a Toile Tales gift certificate!

AND for how cute I feel wearing Amy and Lori's crocheted sweetheart.  Boy oh boy, is it sassy or what?!

I'm thankful for the most amazing hot cocoa EVER and for friends who bring me Kleenex with aloe when I'm sick.

I'm thankful for my son's creativity and how he loves to pretend he's cooking.  I'm thankful that today he wanted to cook with me.

I'm thankful that Kleenexes stay stuck up noses and that I don't always have to be the put-together skin care consultant... even to you all.  Yup.  I posted it.  (Only because I look so cute in the photos above.)  And man am I thankful I don't feel like this often, because it's awful.

I'm thankful that Alejandro was approached with a request for yet another estimate for a job in San Diego and for the way God has just opened the floodgates of work for him there.  But mostly...

I'm thankful for the plane ticket that will bring him home for four days this weekend.  (Read: REALLY BIG SMILE on my face.)

I'm At My Whit's End

I'm just kidding.  I mean, we went to Whit's End.  At Focus on the Family's headquarters!  Last week with my Mom!

It was a blast!!

We parked the stroller and headed into the 0-4 playroom, with padded floors, walls and climbing things. Danny was pretty hesitant to leave my lap for the first 10 or 15 minutes.

But once he did...

...there was...

...no stopping him!

He climbed.

Once he found this little climbing bridge...

...we could not...

...get...

...him...

...off of it.

He climbed it and slid down...

...again and again.  And AGAIN!

He also enjoyed the other activities in the room and then we headed into the theater room.

Danny thoroughly enjoyed a place where he had free reign and could explore to his heart's content.

It was a great day!

Visita a Enfoque en la Familia

La semana pasada, mi madre, Danilo y yo fuimos a visitar el edificio del ministerio Enfoque en la Familia.  ¡Qué diversión!
